PICNIC IN THE PARK – SUNDAY 30^TH JUNE from 12.00 noon – 6.00 p.m.

We cannot guarantee the sun but we can guarantee the fun for all the family. This year the theme is ‘Poetry in the Park’ with competitions for poems inspired by Alexandra Park. As well as receiving prizes, the winners will get to read their poems. For more information about entering, go to Picnic in the Park 30th June 2013 in the Events tab above and then to Poetry Competition.

Other attractions will include –

An ‘Elves and Pixies Dressing Up Competition’ – best mainly home-made outfits will win and cut the ribbon to open the festivities
Music from five live bands
The Widcombe Mummers will be coming again.
A family dog show, so bring the family pet along!
A tug of war competition – so get your street/family/friends organised to enter a team
Tree climbing
Junior football games
Bird spotting with the RSPB
Keep fit demonstrations
Try your hand at bowls and boules

The Bowls Club will be open for tea/coffee, cakes and bar

The Bear – our local pub will be providing a BBQ if you are still hungry or don’t wish to bring a picnic.

SPRING EVENT SATURDAY 13TH APRIL

Despite the weather, everybody had a enjoyable time at our Spring Event on 13th April.

We planted some edible flower seeds in the wild flower areas -

We enjoyed tea, cakes and painting in the Bowls Club.

Representatives of the various activities held in the park – Bowls, Petanque/Boule, Boot Camp Fitness and the Alexandra Park Form were also there to answer any questions and give out information on their activities, the park development and future enhancement.

Re-seeding the wild flower areas

The two wild flower areas that we prepared last year have now been re-seeded with a mixture of perennial and annual wild flowers. The seeds, which were provided by BathNES parks department, were scattered by the Alexandra Park Forum volunteers and other welcome helpers at a special community action day followed by tea, coffee and cakes.

Our thanks to Alexandra Bowling Club for making us welcome in their club house.

Essential tree work in Alexandra Park and on Beechen Cliff

The Council’s tree team, with the assistance of Greenman - Environmental Tree Services, will be carrying out essential tree works within Beechen Cliff and Alexander Park.These tree works need to be carried out at the earliest opportunity and before the start of the bird nesting season. Some of the mature Beech trees needs to be reduced so they can be retained for future years. Unfortunately one of the Beech trees will need to be felled, as it has now come to its end of life, with a fungus commonly known as brittle cinder. The arboricultural term is Kretzschmaria deusta, which causes a breaking down of both celluloseand lignin, decaying the trunk and/or roots of living trees, to the point where the tree can fail.

The tree works are planned to start Monday 18^th February with felling taking place on Tuesday 19^th February. On grass areas where damage has occurred will be reinstated as soon as possible.

Beechen Cliff path resurfaced

Following clearance work by the Community Payback team on the path from Holloway to the Park and on the cliff walk within the Park by the Alexandra Park Forum volunteers, the council has arranged for the path to be resurfaced for much of its length.

How much better it looks! Our thanks to the ‘Rights of Way’ officer for getting this organized!

Best ever community action day!

Saturday 5th January was our twelth community action day and the best attended yet with twelve noble souls attending to help keep Alexandra Park special.

As always, we did a ‘litter pick’.

We also removed more ivy and did further weeding on the wild flower area in preparation for re-seeding in the spring.

The next session will beon 2 February. Meet at 10 am by the main gate. Do join us if you possibly can. The more people that come, even if only for some of the time, the more we can achieve.

More bulbs!

Thanks to the generosity of Stef van Dam and Peter Nyssen Ltd, over 300 tulip bulbs were planted during December by the volunteers in various places around the park. Together with the daffodil bulbs donated by the council, which we planted earlier in the autumn, they should add significant colour to the park next spring.

On 5th December, BathNES in the form of Simon Memory and George Beverley planted six fruit trees in Alexandra Park on the west side of the pedestrian path leading to Beechen Cliff School. They will give added colour in the spring and, in years to come, fruit that anyone can collect. Another welcome enhancement to our wonderful park.

Another successful community action day!

On Saturday, 1st December, six brave souls ignored early an frost to join in another successful community action day. As normal, we first did a litter pick of the Park.

After that we removed ivy from one of the stands of trees.
